Hardwood/Vinyl Frequently Asked Questions

Hardwood

How long before I can walk on recently stain and polyurethane floors? Wait 6 hours before walking on the floors in socks. Wait 24 hours before walking on them with shoes. Allow 48 hours before placing furniture or letting pets back in, and wait 1 full week before laying area rugs.

Do I need to let the wood adjust to my home? Yes. Allow the wood flooring 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate to the indoor temperature and humidity to prevent buckling and warping.

Can I install solid hardwood in a basement? No. Solid hardwood should not be installed below grade because moisture causes it to warp. Use engineered hardwood in basements or over concrete slabs.

Why do I need a gap near the wall? Leave a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. This gives the wood room to expand and contract with seasonal changes in humidity.

Vinyl Plank

Do I need to acclimate vinyl planks? Yes, store boxes in the room for 24 to 48 hours so the material adjusts to the home's temperature and humidity.

How flat does the subfloor need to be? Dips or ridges should not exceed 1/16 inch over a 6-foot span; fill low spots with a floor patch.

Should I use an underlayment? Check the manufacturer guidelines; do not add a separate underlayment if your planks already have a rubberized backing attached.

Can I walk on the floor right away? Light foot traffic is usually fine immediately, but wait 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back inside.
