Is it better to nail or screw vinyl siding? For vinyl siding, screws offer superior holding power and easier adjustment (allowing for expansion/contraction) but are slower and more expensive; nails (specifically galvanized roofing nails) are faster and cheaper but can be prone to loosening if not installed with the required "float," though many pros still prefer them for speed, while some DIYers prefer screws for control and less chance of damaging the siding or themselves. Both methods require leaving the fastener slightly loose to allow the siding to "float" and move with temperature changes, preventing buckling.

Does siding need plywood underneath? A missed stud can result in a situation where overtime the fiber cement siding can sag and break from its own weight. Due to this, we strongly recommend the installation of a heavier structural type of sheathing to eliminate this issue all together. The half-inch OSB or 7/16-inch plywood both fulfill that need.
When installing siding, do you start at the top or bottom? Starter Strip – Installed at the bottom, holds the first row of siding. Siding Panels/Boards – Installed in overlapping rows. Trim – Installed at corners, windows, doors, and soffits.
